Years after years we have been taking a look at costly BBQ islands within the showrooms. Shiny and poorly constructed with plastic tops and sides spray-painted to create illusion of stucco end they have been falling apart on my mates’ backyards after one season within the Northwest.
We really needed summer kitchen, considering time we usually spent cooking outside utilizing our grills and smoker. Deck was built already, however we’ve determined so as to add yet one more level for kitchen island only.
Step 1: Estimate how large of an island you want, which shape, and which BBQ you will be shopping for. We’ve selected Vermont brand after reading about it at Amazon and checking high quality at local House Depot. Try to get one with straight corners, side burner, and with hidden underneath wheels. It made sense to purchase full unit as an alternative of going for “separate head and separate side burner” sets. Top quality Vermont (made in Canada) with side burner was $649, while head itself (made in China) was around $800 plus $400 for additional burner. We have bought couple 20% OFF coupons on eBay and obtained BBQ for $519 (get your building materials at the same time, so coupon would work for 20% OFF Complete Purchase).
Step 2: Decide which stainless steel doorways you want and how many. Measure them on Weber grill you like at the shop. Name Weber and order them for about $forty each. So-known as “Door Package for Constructed-in BBQ” prices about $four hundred from the same manufacturer. Complete framing with 2×4 PT boards, calculating walls’ lengths and hights so much less chopping might be required throughout set up of 12″x12″ stone slates (they are literally 11 3/four”x11 3/four”). Contemplating 1/4″ spacing you may want to make top 24″ extensive (2 slates). Body opening(s) for door(s). REMEMBER to make openings 1/2″ bigger then you will need them considering thickness of beckerboard+adhesive+slate. So for 20″x20″ door you will want opening framed at 20 1/2″ by 20 1/2″. Be sure that while framing prime, that it must be stone island tracksuit 2014 at slight angle backward (outdoors) to permit rainwater to run off, but not inside your island.
Step three: Run conduit for outlet, lights and water pipes during framing course of.
Step four: Set up beckerboard. Use 1/2″ thick. Don’t use Wonderboards: they’re for floors and never as robust as Hardibeckers. You have to special blade to chop them: one which marked for slicing Hardiplank siding.
Step 5: Start installing natural stone slates. They only price (with coupon) ninety cents every, acquired lovely colours and might withstand any weather with out compromising high quality. I bought a easy 12″ chop noticed on eBay for $30 delivered value with “diamond” blade. It remains to be good after ending this venture.
Step 6: Use artificial blend (polymer) as a mortar and for grout I went with Keracolor S stone island tracksuit 2014 Sanded kind, since spaces were about 1/four”. Upon washing off excess grout and letting stones dry, “Impregnator 511” sealer was applied to all slated surfaces.
Step 6: As a result of Vermont grill is a “stand-alone” mannequin and did not have rear heat-resisting panel, one sheet of galvanized steel was put in behind it prior to rolling BBQ in place. Refrigirator was added for summer season months.
Whole value was around $1200 (with grill and refrigerator). Materials alone: below $500

I’d never ever use a wooden body in a bbq island. Why even threat fire, and what burns higher then something Wood. You can buy steel studs at Residence Depot, it’s a bit extra work to make a body out of it, but not less than it is fire proof. The rest of the steps are the same, you can still attach backer board to it. Additionally if you happen to in the northern states further precautions must be taken to waterproof hardibacker.

That is as step-by-step as I did it few years ago. Still seems to be good, however I don’t have any plans, since all the things was tied as much as the scale of the deck, tile pieces and BBQ’ dimensions.

Good design thought. I feel I might need used 2″ thick concrete block in the grill space to make sure no flamables are involved.
