I have been trying the strategy below on a few (free) sites i use to promote my pay site http://zgasm.com and im seeing positive results.

You need Google analytics.

The "strategy" is this….Collect stats for a whileAfter a few weeks (i use months) goto Traffic Sources > Referring SourcesSort by visitsChange "Show Rows" to 100You should now have a list of your top 100 referring sources sorted by the # of visitors they have sent you…From here i eye ball the sites that send the highest % of new visitors.
I then force traffic to sites that match this criteria:89% or higher new visitorsHigh "Ave time spent on site"High pages/visit

The whole thing takes like 2 min max and i do it 100% by eyeballing. I suppose its just a productivity measurement, but the past 3-4 times i have tried this, i noticed increased sign ups over the next couple days.

Does anyone do anything similar/along those lines? Got any suggestions?
